Loved this. So glad you were able to get Will on to talk about his new book. He is a delight to listen to. This must have been an incredibly hard experience for him to go through. I will indeed read his new book.

As a Baptist, I was left wondering why separate and remain Methodist. It seems an oxymoron to be Methodist sans the connectional trust. I wondered why Mark thought the review merited space on Baptist News Global. Maybe he harbored the same notion, that this was more Baptist than Methodist. Will does not draw the direct point but as much finds the move contra Methodism.

There are several Baptist options. Beware, we tend to be as schismatic as any group.

The book needed to be written for at least the reason that clearly we all carry church within us - it’s good and ill. Your review makes that point clear.

I read BNG from time to time. I am not sure I would characterize Mark’s writers as liberal, and not necessarily his audience. He just published a piece from someone who would not be considered a liberal within the SBC, but neither would he be received as a fundamentalist. Labels are only helpful to pitch someone in a pocket so as not to have to deal with the complexities of important issues. I learned that from My Dog Skip.

BNG published the review because it had opened up to the story in the first place back in late 2024: https://baptistnews.com/article/meddling-with-methodism-and-domesticating-the-baptists/ I am grateful Mark published a piece that was outside the norm for his audience and well beyond the norm of his writers in that it came from a conservative position.
